Daniel W. Anderson
About
Managing Partner | Business Law • Family Law • Estate Planning • Appeals
Daniel W. Anderson is a Managing Partner of Mills & Anderson Law Group. Practicing in Nevada since 2006, Daniel maintains a broad practice focused on the firm's three core areas—business law, family law, and estate planning—and manages the firm's appellate practice across all disciplines.
A substantial portion of Daniel's practice is devoted to business and transactional law. He represents entrepreneurs, closely held companies, investors, and business owners throughout the life cycle of a business, from formation and governance through growth, restructuring, sale, succession, or dissolution. His transactional practice includes business purchases and sales, mergers and acquisitions, buy-sell and ownership agreements, operating agreements, equity and synthetic-equity compensation arrangements, phantom equity and profit-participation plans, ownership transfers, secured transactions, commercial leases, licensing agreements, seller-financed transactions, and other complex commercial agreements.
Daniel also serves as ongoing business and strategic counsel, advising owners and management on corporate governance, ownership and partner relationships, contracts, risk management, executive and key-employee incentive arrangements, equity and synthetic-equity structures, business succession, acquisitions and dispositions, and disputes among owners. Because Daniel also has extensive litigation experience, he approaches transactions with an eye toward identifying and addressing potential disputes before they arise.
When disputes cannot be avoided, Daniel represents businesses and individuals in civil and commercial litigation, including breach-of-contract and ownership disputes, business dissolutions, enforcement of commercial agreements, and partition and other disputes involving the ownership of real property.
Daniel also manages the firm's estate-planning practice, working with individuals, families, and business owners to develop plans for the management, protection, and transfer of their assets. His estate-planning work includes wills and trusts, revocable living trusts, asset-protection planning, business succession planning, and coordinating business ownership with a client's broader estate plan. His experience in both business and estate planning is particularly valuable where the two disciplines intersect, including succession of closely held businesses, transfers of ownership interests, buy-sell arrangements, trusts holding business interests, and planning for the preservation and transfer of family wealth.
In the firm's family-law practice, Daniel represents clients in matters ranging from divorce and child custody to complex property and financial disputes. His experience includes high-asset divorce, business interests and valuation issues, property division, relocation, child custody and support, alimony, enforcement and modification proceedings, and other contested family-law matters.
Daniel also manages the firm's appellate practice across all areas of law. He has represented clients before the Nevada Supreme Court and Nevada Court of Appeals in family, civil, business, and other matters. His appellate work has contributed to multiple published Nevada appellate opinions addressing issues including civil and business liability, termination of parental rights, adoptive and relative placement, enforcement of divorce judgments, veterans' disability benefits, civil procedure, and appellate practice.
Daniel's practice is particularly suited to matters that cross traditional practice-area boundaries. A business transaction may require succession and estate planning; a divorce may involve closely held companies and complex ownership interests; and a dispute involving family property may implicate trusts, business entities, contracts, and real estate. His experience across business law, family law, estate planning, litigation, and appeals allows him to address those interconnected issues as part of a comprehensive legal strategy.
Daniel began working with the firm as a law clerk in 2004 while attending the William S. Boyd School of Law at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. After earning his law degree and admission to the Nevada Bar in 2006, he joined the firm as an associate. He became a partner in 2013 and now serves as Managing Partner.
Selected Appellate Matters
Daniel manages Mills & Anderson's appellate practice and has served as counsel in numerous matters before the Nevada Supreme Court and Nevada Court of Appeals. His appellate work includes several published opinions that have established or clarified Nevada law.
Philip R. v. Eighth Judicial District Court, 134 Nev. 223, 416 P.3d 242 (2018) Represented foster/adoptive parents in consolidated extraordinary-writ proceedings before the Nevada Supreme Court. The Court granted writ relief and clarified the statutory framework governing relative-placement preferences following termination of parental rights.
Fanders v. Riverside Resort & Casino, Inc., 126 Nev. 543, 245 P.3d 1159 (2010) Represented the appellant in obtaining reversal of summary judgment before the Nevada Supreme Court. Byrd v. Byrd, 137 Nev. Adv. Op. 60 (Nev. Ct. App. 2021) Represented the appellant in obtaining reversal and remand of a post-divorce order. The published opinion addressed NRCP 60(b)(6), federal preemption concerning veterans' disability benefits, and standards governing audiovisual participation in court proceedings.
In re Parental Rights as to J.D.N., 128 Nev. 462, 283 P.3d 842 (2012) Served as appellate counsel and drafted the appellant's briefing in a published Nevada Supreme Court case addressing termination of parental rights and the evidentiary burden for rebutting statutory presumptions concerning parental fault and a child's best interests.
Davidson v. Davidson, 132 Nev. 709, 382 P.3d 880 (2016) Served as appellate counsel in a published Nevada Supreme Court decision addressing enforcement of property provisions in divorce decrees, statutes of limitation, and appellate jurisdiction over post-judgment enforcement orders.
Daniel has also handled numerous other appeals and writ proceedings involving family law, civil litigation, business disputes, property rights, and procedural issues. His appellate experience informs his work at both the trial and transactional levels, from structuring agreements to identifying dispositive legal issues, developing the record, preserving issues for review, and anticipating how legal decisions may ultimately be evaluated on appeal.
